No Tutorials, what the heck?

So, I have time in and time out said that this blog would feature occasional tutorials or recipes. Little did I know that I would mess so many things up when I tried them, that there would be more, "How Not To Do" things than "How To". Because of this fact, I have occasionally joked about my inability to do things, and linked to websites with great tutorials. Well now has come the time to gather what I have learned and give a little insight to my readers.

How not to light a fire in the fireplace:
Cardboard boxes, lighter fluid and a closed flue.
When we first moved in we were eager to try our fireplace. Luckily we had it inspected otherwise I believe my husband would have blown us up. Once the flue was safely opened and the interior of the chimney was checked, he realized we had no fire wood.. did this stop him? Momentarily. Then he gathered all of our moving boxes, some newspapers, and the lighter fluid, then threw in a match.. who need's lights when your husband is a pyromaniac? Thank God he was smart enough to only add a little cardboard at a time.

How not to store books:
On the Second Shelf of a bookcase
My daughter is grabby. Silly me thought that if she kept toys and baby books on the bottom shelf, she would ignore the next shelf. HAHAHA. If she can reach it she grabs it. I now only keep books on the top 2 shelves, leave on empty and one for her. Yes, this eliminates storage, and the purpose of holding all our books on one book case, however our family concordance (kind of like an encyclopedia of Bible stuff) fell on her foot and that made me find a new home for them.

How not to make "leftover  mixed up crayons":
In an open frying pan that you like to cook with
We made the mistake when we first moved in of attempting to make some multicolor crayons for my daughter and neice.. My thought was that they would melt a little bit and then all the colors would become swirly and cool to draw with. Well, no, they all mixed together to make some really ugly colors.. I had sorted by shades so instead of cool blues purples and greens, I got a dark blue. Instead of warm reds, oranges and pinks, I got burnt sienna and instead of Yellows and Greens, I got poop green. The only good idea I had was to use some of our surplus of ice cube trays because then I didn't ruin the cupcake tins. PS I can't get the colors or smell out of that pan...

More coming soon!

PRESENTS! 12 days of giveaways: Day 5- Funky Glass & More by Jenni Zigman

Unfortunately I was unable to review something from this crafter personally so I resorted to asking Jenni to post on her facebook wall that I would need a previous or current customer to attest to their experiences and we got a volunteer to let me know what they thought! I got an email from Jeanne who wanted to give some input.
Jeanne West-Novelli had a bit to say on the work of Jenni Zigman: " She has made me several items and still making some for me. I had asked her back in May what I could do for my mother getting remarried and she suggested special wine glasses that ended up being more amazing then I could have ever imagined. All of her items you can see she puts her heart and soul into them. She even comes across new items and emails me because she knows what I like and lets me know ahead of time about the items knowing that I will love them. I tell everyone about her incrediable glassware and her ornaments, Ive ordered 15 of them and cant wait for them. She is amazing and it shows in her work! Thank you for letting me share my opinion regarding Funky Glass and more by Jenni Zigman."

I loved these diapers for so many reasons; I don’t even know where to start.
The basic principles of a diaper in my eyes would be absorbency, contact, appearance, feel and disposal. Here are my thoughts on each..

Absorbancy: Does it hold a lot? Does it leak overnight?
I found these diapers more absorbent than I expected them to be. No leaks detected and when it was full it did not feel wet through the outside.

Contact: Does it cause a rash? Is there extra dampness on the skin?
No rash on my little princess. A little extra dampness, but letting her air dry between changes or using a cloth wipe to dry her in between would likely eliminate it. Fit well on her, average or a bit bigger than average. The big-ness may have been because I ordered a size 5 instead of typical size 4 to make sure that they would fit and not be too small. Perhaps a smaller size would have eliminated this? Will have to try again.

Appearance: Is it neutral or made gender specific?
Is it plain or bright?
Very neutral, simple pattern through out the whole diaper. Plain coloring. They are white with a small design in a deep green. There is no patterned band like on many diapers.

Feel: Is it soft or rough? How would you describe the texture of the inside and outside?
It feels a little starchy or rough, but did not cause discomfort for the baby.

Disposal: Is this cloth or disposable? Does it have any environmentally friendly features?
This is disposable. but it is made with Organic materials.

PRESENTS! 12 days of giveaways: Day 3- Raynedrops Creations

In the words of Jennifer Rodriguez, "This is kind of short and sweet but I'm not really sure how to describe a simple little creature.  He is cute and my son Ryan likes to throw him out of his bed... along with all his other stuffed animals."

Mama Sunshine: Please describe the item:
Jennifer: The dino is a small 12" creature that is green with blue spots (customized this way to match Ryan's Halloween costume)

MS: Was your Raynedrops Creature worth the price you paid?
J:Yes, our dino is worth its value because they can be customized to however you want them.

MS: How does it compare to other crocheted items you have experience with?
J: Ryan's dino is very well put together, double stitched at all the seams and has no pieces for a baby to choke on.

MS: How does it compare to other stuffed animals or toys you have experience with?
J: Ryan loves his dino.  He stays in the bed with him at night.  Ryan's favorite game with his stuffed animals is to throw them all out of his bed and then he stares at them on the floor because he can't get them back.  When I check on him throughout the night, I put them back in his bed and by morning, they are all back on the floor.

MS: What would make it better?
J: The only thing that I would change is to make him bigger but he is customizable and this can be done, we just didn't think about it when we got him.

MS: Thank you so much for the review Jennifer!
Some Other Raynedrops Creatures as seen on their facebook page:

Support Raynedrops or order a creature of your own at http://www.facebook.com/raynedrops.creatures

Win it! One winner will get to design a dino with your own specifications!

PRESENTS! 12 days of giveaways: Day 2- Abby's Lane

Abby’s Lane: Review of BabyLegs
I want to say thank you to Stephanie from Abby’s Lane. I was not going to do a review for them until I had more followers, but she had faith that the extra traffic from this event would make it worth it for them. Abby’s Lane is an online retailer that sells cloth diapering materials and accessories.
When my package came it, it was the smallest of the 5 that arrived at once. I was excited that it arrived so quickly! I opened it up and my babylegs were wrapped up so very nicely. I took them out and played around with them a bit, stretching them, looking at their length, and more. Then I realized I really didn’t have an outfit that matched them yet (I chose them cause they were my favorite, not cause they made sense with her wardrobe! Oops)! Since I was eager to have her try them out, I decided I would take a too small brown dress and make it into a tunic, then she could wear them! I cut out the onesie portion of the dress, and put a cute diaper cover on her instead.
Luckily for me, it worked! She wore her cute little tunic and BabyLegs all day long with little problems. I did deliberately put them on upside down because I wanted to show off the accent color more than the brown. At one point towards the end of the evening they did begin to roll down her chubby little thighs, but I think that was because they were upside down, I am going to try them again this week and see if they do the same facing the correct way.
Great news! We found a jean skirt and a plain top that allowed us to put our daughter into these again, they are fantastic, and no rolling this time :)

Support it: Abby's lane has a facebook. It is not required to "like" them, but I am sure they would love to have you as a fan, and I hear they may have some freebies on their page this weekend!
Buy it: Abby's Lane can be found online at www.abbyslane.com they offer a variety of items such as cloth diapers, baby accessories and and more!
Win it: Abby's Lane is offering a $10 gift card to their online store to one lucky winner.
How to enter: Fill out this form one time for all entries. Entries valid 11/27/10 to 11/30/10. Winner will be announced Dec 10.

This giveaway will close on November 30,2010. This is not a paid post. I was given a product from Abby's Lane to try. All of the opinions stated above are my own. The winner must have a US mailing address. The winner will be chosen by random and contacted by email. If no response within  48 hours, then another winner will be chosen. If the form is not working between the 27th and 30th, please comment with your email address and ask for a form to be sent to you and add sunshinetostarshine@yahoo.com to your accepted emais list.

PRESENTS! 12 days of giveaways: Day 1- Crazydogtshirts.com

CrazyDogTshirts.com review and giveaway
Adult XXL “You like this” facebook shirt

I was delighted with my experience at CrazyDogTshirts.com. Not only was the representative I spoke with kind, but the company was extremely gracious in giving us a tee to try out and a tee to giveaway for my lucky fans. I opted to hang on to this giveaway for the “Sunshine to Starshine and Thrifty Nifty Mommy present PRESENTS!” 12 day holiday giveaway event.
When my package arrived I was exceedingly pleased with the amount of time it took to get here! Not even 3 days!! I opened up the small plastic packaging bag and inside my tshirt. It was soooooooooo soft. I cannot stress enough how soft this tshirt was, it was like a cloud or something. This was the softest tshirt I have ever worn in my entire life. It was smooth, soft, and every other descriptive word you would want a tshirt to be! I was not itchy at all. The color was just like it showed online, not the typical grey, but not too blue either, it was a little less dreary than I assume a grey shirt would be..

I ordered a size 2X because I wanted to make sure it fit well enough to not expose my tummy or anything, and keep it for a while (hopefully I would lose weight and it would one day become a bed shirt only). This shirt fit her nicely, loose enough that I can wear it comfortably, but not too big either. I love it. Now let me explain the shirt choice a bit: I decided that I would get this shirt with the intention that after the review I would do a transfer with the logo from my blog and the links, almost like a walking business card. I still like this idea, but I do not want to compromise the comfy-ness of this tee, so we will see what happens.

Buy It: You can buy Crazy Dog Tshirts at Crazydogtshirts.com. They also work side by side with NachoMamaTee.com and costumesquad.com!

Support It: Please take the time to follow them on facebook!

Win It:
Your Choice..
  • Free Mystery Tee (they would need to specify their size in Mens and
mailing address) (open to the US only)
    OR

  • Free $15 Gift Card (you would need to release their email address to us to
    receive the code via email)

  • How to enter: Fill out the form below one time for all possible entries. Entries will be accepted from 11/26/2010 to 11/29/2010.

This giveaway will close on November 29,2010. This is not a paid post. I was given a t-shirt from Crazy Dog Tshirts to review through SheBlogs. Crazy Dog Tshirts is also giving a t-shirt or gift card (winner's choice) away to one of my lucky readers! All of the opinions stated above are my own. The winner cannot have won or been given a shirt for promotional purposes in the last 90 days. The winner must have a US mailing address. The winner will be chosen by random and contacted by email. If no response within 48 hours, then another winner will be chosen. If the form is not working between the 26th and 29th, please comment with your email address and ask for a form to be sent to you and add sunshinetostarshine@yahoo.com to your accepted emais list.

Cradle Rock review: Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson, Kenny Chesney

I will start with the Johnny Cash CD. I thought that the packaging for all of these CDs were deceptive. “Lullaby versions of songs recorded by Johnny Cash” made it seem to me that Johnny Cash recorded lullaby versions of his own songs. “I Crawl the Line” is the title along the bottom, okay, I thought maybe this was a comic relief type of thing. Even if it was a tribute style by someone else, at least it would be funny. The illustrations are also not clear as to what to expect- the characters look like they are supposed to be the singers that the CDs are based on. I wish somewhere there was the word “instrumental” to describe them, the only hint is the xylophone image on the back. As soon as you open the shrink wrap and open the case you see “arranged, performed, produced, mixed and mastered by Stephen Gause”. HEY WAIT! I thought this was by Johnny Cash! Well, I already opened up so let’s see how it goes.

When I hear the word lullaby, I imagine the song that goes “Hush little baby don’t say a word, daddy’s gonna buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird don’t sing, daddy’s gonna buy you a diamond ring. And if that diamond ring don’t shine...” so on and so forth. I imagine soft music accompanied by soft voices singing relaxing words. I might also envision a mother rocking a child in their glider and singing until they fall into a slumber. I do not think of what I got when I played these three CDs. These CDs were comprised of instrumental variations of popular songs by these three artists. Do you really think that “I walk the line” or “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash can be turned into lullabies? I had a hard time.

I love country music. I did not love the two country CDs that were a part of this package. I found that the songs did not work well as lullabies. I was not tired or relaxed, but I was headache-y, which made me want to go to sleep.  I listened to the entire “No shoes, No diaper, Might be a problem” cd and was only able to determine what song was playing a handful of times. On the Johnny Cash “I crawl the line” CD it was even more difficult to find songs that were soothing or distinguishable.

I also love Michael Jackson. Although the music was more easy to distinguish on “Thrillaby” than the others it was still a quite fast tempo and not exactly lullaby music. I enjoyed this, of the three, the most. Parts of this cd reminded me of some types of jazz, something that my father would listen to as I was growing up, so it was soothing to me, but probably not many others.

As a whole, I would not recommend this set unless you have an avid fan of one of these three artists in mind who might forgive the discrepancies on the case and thoroughly enjoy using this music to put their child to sleep, even though it might not work for us.

Story Time for Me, everyone wins!

Story Time for Me is a website with multimedia children's books that we can all easily access. Once you create an account you have the opportunity to access up to 2 free books of your choice.
All you have to do is go to http://www.storytimeforme.com/2books and sign up!

Your two complimentary book credits are there right away, then you get to browse the books and choose what you want to add to your library. These books are read aloud, so older kids can read along with the highlighted words, and hear what is being said at the same time. The images can also be animated, so that there is movement in the characters and scenery, but this option can be turned off if you prefer that your child focus on the words.

I chose "Fern Goes for a Dive" and "Ben Visits an Apple Orchard" as my two books. I wanted to see how the different age levels would affect the stories and animations. I also wanted to compare different character series.

"Fern Goes for a Dive" is focused towards ages 1-4 and I think it is perfect for my 14 month old. My daughter was able to sit and watch this 2:34 minute video thoroughly and was very focused. The graphics were exciting and ever changing, and they taught a lot about creatures under the sea. The narration does not include dialog, but describes what is happening and what they see in the images.

"Ben Visits an Apple Orchard" is aimed to ages 4-8 and is a much longer 10 mins 48 seconds. This book features paragraphs and dialog between the characters. My daughter is too young for this and got bored, but I loved the illustrations and learning who each character was. Perfect for the pre-school and kindergarten kids I used to work with!

    Sponsored by Tomoson.com
I hope this mini review helps you and I hope you take advantage of using your 2 free books!!

    Spicing things up..

Mama Sunshine is going to get a job this week.
I am a certified paraprofessional. I have always wanted to teach elementary school, however, previous jobs have opened my eyes up to kids of all ages and made me much more open to working with some of the older kids.
I am not only a wife, mom, blogger, babysitter, artist and friend to many, I am also a college student with a dual major in Elementary Education and Special Education. This means that I could work with any level special needs, or in elementary school for regular ed.
A friend of mine told me that her boss loved me at my interview last week, and I also have an interview at another place tomorrow. Now the question is, do I go to a daycare where I can be with my daughter but is not with the age range that I want to be with, or go to a public school where I will get paid more and have to put my daughter into some sort of childcare.. It will be a tough choice.
Either way, this blog will be seasoned with a little more life no matter which job I take. I will be busier, and so much better off getting out of the house. I was not meant to be a stay at home parent, and 14 months later, I am glad to have a chance to get back.

    Sunday Family Time

Today is the last day of my husband's mini-vacation between two jobs. I am making a big breakfast. Then comes church. Instead of church we took a mid-morning nap and relaxed. We are having a friend of ours and his daughter coming to enjoy football and chili for supper.

I have been working extremely hard to get everything planned for our 600 follower photo shoot giveaway and our PRESENTS! 12 day giveaway event.. I am working with TNM on that, but I am planning most of it, I want to make sure that I make the contact with the companies and we establish a relationship for long term.

I am also being featured as a reviewer for my friend Jenni on her blog coming soon, the product hasn't come in yet but I am looking forward to helping her get her first review ever up on her blog!

    Fireplace Newbie

    Fire
So today we had our fireplace cleaned and inspected. Since we just moved here in September we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. My husband and in laws have never had a fireplace, and at both my mom and dad's homes we had them but I was never in charge of using them. I didn't even know how to open it up, let alone light it! Some girl scout I was!! I looked up a tutorial online and found it very helpful and wanted to pass it on to any other foolish fireplace femme out there that may be reading this: http://www.wikihow.com/Light-a-Fire-in-a-Fireplace
    21 Days
I am getting ready to begin my endeavor with the book 21 Days to Loving Your Husband on Purpose and with a Plan. I cannot disclose the exact day because my husband is not supposed to know about it (he does know about the book and my friend Jen who I am doing it with, but not when I am beginning or what the challenges are). Since he pops in here occasionally all I will say is I am excited and I think that our relationship will get much stronger through this.
    >GiveawaysCurrently there is the Peter Rabbit Organics review & giveaway going on until November 17th http://sunshinetostarshine.blogspot.com/2010/10/peter-rabbit-organics-squeezable-fruit.htmlThere is a 12 day giveaway event from Nov 26 to Dec 7 on my blog and on Thrifty Nifty Mommy which includes gift cards, home made items, and more!

    Holiday Giveaway 12 Day Event

    News:
Mama Sunshine is having a job interview on Friday! This is a big deal because I have wanted to work for months, I was at a point where as much as I love being home, it was too much time off for me. To each their own, if you want to stay home full time forever you are remarkable, but I have really gotten Cabin fever and I hate being broke. Plus, it is a job where my daughter can come too! I think this will strengthen my marriage and my wellbeing. Wish me luck!
My husband, Mark, is starting a new job on Monday. Not only is he switching his hotel brand (strange terminology, I know, I didn't name it!) but he is also getting ready to run for Board of Education in our very small city. He has one year to campaign and get elected to fix the board of ed. His campaign slogan is "bringing common sense back to the board".
Sunshine to Starshine and Thrifty Nifty Mommy are getting together for a 12 day blog and flash giveaway event coming November 26th to December 7th. We have some giveaways planned for the end of the month, but we need many more, I hope to have at least  80. Please email me if you want to sponsor or have any questions! sunshinetostarshine@yahoo.com
    Happy Wednesday!!

    Talk to Me Tuesday

    1. Do you wear eye makeup? If you frequently wear shadow.. what color(s)?
    2. If you are a parent, have you ever cloth diapered your child?
    3. What is your favorite type of cereal?
    4. What type of key chains do you have on your keys?
    5. What is your favorite autumn meal (besides Thanksgiving)?

    ~My answers~

    • I wear only eyeliner usually. When I do shadow I somehow make it look like I was punched in the eye no matter what color I use. I am terrible with makeup in general.
    • I have never Cloth Diapered Ariana, but I hope to try it before she gets potty trained in hopes of CD-ing my next one!
    • My favorite type of cereal.. hmm.. I would have to say that right now my favorite is Frosted Wheat
    • I have a key chain from a fundraiser that I helped run a couple years ago "Morgan's Angels of Hope" (It is a silver M with wings and a halo) and a Lanyard from my husband's high school (because we share the keys) which is actually my school's rival.
    • My favorite meal for a cold autumn day is grilled cheese and tomato soup. YUMMY!
